Home Based Care
Target Group
One in four households in Kenya foster at least one orphan by providing for health, shelter, nutrition, education and other needs. However, many of these care-givers are overburdened and often lack the socio-economic capacity to provide adequate care and support for these children. We therefore feel the need to encourage and empower them increase their care giving capacities within the community.
Philosophy
In our 13 years experience of working with the orphans and other vulnerable children, we have realized how important it is not to isolate these children from their communities. We have also realized that we can not reach an orphan or vulnerable child without going through a home that is taking care of this child and the community where this child lives.
Our emphasis
We stress that…...a child whether an orphan or not is part of a given family or community. That is where he derives an identity and a sense of belonging. We believe this is important for a more holistic development of every human being.
What do we do?
We work with families and communities to try to sensitize and empower them to be actually the ones to nature these children and protect them from danger. We support community caregivers with basics needs of food, clothing, bedding, start up capital, psychosocial and spiritual care. We Provide them with education support of orphans and vulnerable children under their care and renovate or build for them better houses. This involves improving the general hygiene of the household caring for the orphans through our local Village Group volunteers. Some are trained with business and vocational skills to empower them to initiate income generating activities. We also encourage them to form social support groups to develop a collective voice and assist them in lobbying for resources to address their pressing needs and access of micro-finance credits.
However, our activities greatly depend on the availability of resources which we still lack by far and this greatly affects consistency in our programme implementation.
We rely a lot on our local village volunteers to support this programme who need support too. We realize that this programme can not be sustained by village volunteers a lone; we need a technical human resource as well material and financial resources to strengthen our implementation capacity and effectiveness. Please, support us! Because of this programme, we have seen a number of households and community caregivers we have supported and empowered being able to feed, cloth, accommodate, treat and educate children under their care on their own. And for us, this is a positive and a more sustainable way of caring and supporting millions of orphans and other vulnerable children being born into poverty in Kenya today.
